Classroom Instruction

To request library instruction, faculty are encouraged to email library@beaconcollege.edu or stop by the library for an in-person discussion. Librarians are assigned to classes based on their schedules and professional/educational backgrounds.

The librarians work with faculty to design instruction that is unique to the needs of the class. For this reason, faculty are expected to request instruction at least two weeks in advance and be prepared for a discussion regarding expectations for the session(s). Faculty should plan to be present in the classroom for all instructional sessions, unless prior arrangements have been made.

The librarians are always looking for creative, innovative ways to provide students with critical information literacy skills that will benefit them not just at Beacon College but as lifelong learners, so please do not hesitate to contact us with your ideas on how we can best support you and your students.

Course Guides

The librarians are happy to create a research guide for any of your classes. This helps guide students to the resources you deem most appropriate to complete assignments. Please see examples on the Library website but know that we can work with you to create one that meets your unique needs. Please note that these guides can take some time to create, so the ideal time to discuss a new one is in between semesters. However, the librarians will do their best to develop a guide whenever the need arises.

Classroom Booking

The library classroom is available for faculty to reserve. Directions for how to do so can be found below. Please reach out to the library staff at library@beaconcollege.edu with any questions or issues.

Please note that this space is open to the students when it is not booked. For this reason, we request that faculty be conscientious about when and how they reserve this area. Faculty who make last minute reservations (less than 48 hours notice), cancel without sufficient warning (less than 24 hours), or who fail to show up for their scheduled time may be restricted from reserving this space. We appreciate your understanding as we strive to meet the needs of our students with limited space.

To make a reservation:

  1. Use your Outlook calendar to create a new meeting/appointment
  2. In the To field, enter LibraryClass@beaconcollege.edu
  3. For the subject, please note the name of the class/workshop
  4. For the location, select Library Classroom from the drop-down menu
  5. Send the invitation, including any relevant information for the library staff

Individual Student Appointments

When requiring research in your classes, please encourage your students to reach out to the librarians for assistance in finding appropriate sources. While we make every effort to accommodate students who drop in to the library for assistance, please note that a librarian is not always immediately available. Students should therefore be advised to schedule an appointment in advance by emailing library@beaconcollege.edu.

If you have a class or large group of students you know would benefit from extra research assistance, please reach out to the librarians to schedule a special research session.

Laptop Lending

The Library offers four Dell laptop computers available for students to check out for a two-hour period. Students may use the laptop in the library or bring it to their classes. Students have the option to check out a charger and/or laptop case.

Please be aware that students do need to fill out a form accepting responsibility for any damage.

Video Streaming

The library currently has a subscription to Swank Digital Campus. Through this resource, we are able to offer educational use of an extensive collection of popular contemporary and classic movies. We have access to 25 popular titles and have the ability to license 25 more for the academic year. Each semester faculty should request access to films they will be showing in their class. This does operate on a first come. first serve basis.
