TORCH LAB III

Welcome to the Torch Lab LibGuide!

What are Banned Books?

"Banned Books" are books whose content expresses inappropriate or opposing themes and viewpoints held by certain groups, people, or organizations and successfully removed from public or school spaces, particularly libraries and classrooms. (Adapted from the ALA Banned Book FAQ.)

"Challenged Books" are books whose content is challenged in an "attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group." When books are challenged by certain groups, people, or organizations their objective is to restrict or remove access from schools, curriculum, or libraries. (Adapted from the ALA Banned Book FAQ.)

"Censorship,"  the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are "offensive," happens whenever some people succeed in imposing their personal political or moral values on others. (Definition provided by ACLU: What is Censorship.)
